Research & Planning: Results from Audience Feedback

I decided it would be good if I made a post highlighting the results from the audience feedback for the first cut of my movie trailer.

Fortunately everybody surveyed said they recognised the genre of the film to be 'romance', though nobody picked up on the comedy elements. People did mention that it did seem to fit into the 'drama' genre too, so we need to work on making the script/shot list funnier to get the comedy aspect across more.

Here are what people thought were the main strengths of our trailer:

  • Lots of different shot types used, a lot of people especially liked the car shots
  • People thought the trailer was well edited
  • Lighting suits the genre, nice mixture of light/dark
  • The plot/storyline was a highlight for most people
  • People liked the acting skills of our friends
  • A few people commented on our use of camera angles

Here are what people thought were areas for development:

  • The camera was shaky in some areas, especially the pan shots
  • Some scenes were too long, in particularly the scene on the phone
  • In two scenes, actors look directly into the camera
  • In a few scenes, the camera has gone out of focus*
  • Everybody picked up on the lack of any background music/sfx
  • People said that too much of the story is given away
  • A few people said the trailer was more like a short film, more fast paced scenes should be included

*Unfortunately due to the screen on the camera, we were unable to detect the blurriness until post-production.
