Research & Planning: Publication Plan

Research & Planning: Updated Storyline/Plot

After having a meeting with my partner, we have decided on the revised idea for our storyline (since two of our actors are now unable to partake in this production).

Plot:

Male character moved away to university a couple of years ago. He decided that him and his girlfriend were going to come home one weekend to surprise his parents. When they got to his parents house they were on holiday and his ex girlfriend (and high school sweetheart) was housesitting as she is still close friends with his parents. The male protagonist and his girlfriend decided to stay for the weekend even though his parents weren't there. Seeing and spending time with his ex brings back some good memories and feelings, they end up falling for each other again and when the weekend is over he decides he is not going back to the city and breaks up with his current girlfriend.

Cinematography:

  • high key lighting - bright, happy
  • Colouring - red, white, pink
  • Slow paced editing, mostly straight and jumps cut to make it realistic and maybe some graphic matches and action matches.
  • Shot types - Medium and long shot mostly, a few close ups and establishing shots
  • Camera angles - high angles on the current girlfriend, low angles on main male character and main female
Mise-en-scene:
  • Male and girlfriend from the university dressed smartly and fashionable
  • People from the country wearing casual clothing
  • natural make up
Sound:
  • Royalty free, acoustic music and our own sound effects

Research & Planning: Film Poster Draft 2

This is my second draft of my film poster. The main photograph is of the male protagonist and his ex girlfriend (his high school sweetheart) lay together on a sofa, whilst the male protagonists current girlfriend is sat on the opposite end of the coach, with a blank/angry expression on her face. The comedic element comes from the contrast between the two lovers' happy faces, and the current girlfriend's blank expression. The romance can be seen from the loving relationship evident between the male protagonist and his ex girlfriend (they are lay next to each other, I apologise for my lack of drawing skills). Above the photo is the title of the film, Double Ex. The text is slanted at the same angle as the sofa (and as the banner below the photograph). Above the film name is the names of the three 'star' actors playing the main characters in the film. Below the photograph, as mentioned, is a slanted banner. The banner gives important information about the release date of the film, and it also displays a (temporary, yet to be decided upon) film tag line. Below the banner is the usual movie credits (written in steeltongs font), and the production/distribution company names/logos. I have also included a link to the film's website, and put the film's certificate rating (12A) in the bottom right hand corner.

Research & Planning: Film Poster Draft 1

This is draft 1 of my film poster. For this poster I envisioned the male protagonist and his ex girlfriend (his high school sweetheart) stood next to each other gazing lovingly at each other, whilst the male protagonists current girlfriend is stood behind inbetween the two characters with an angry/blank expression. The photograph needs to be comedic, yet hint at a relationship between the male protagonist and his ex girlfriend. The title of the movie 'Double Ex' is displayed in a large block sans-serif font above this photo, as is the list of stars (actors) involved in the movie. Below the photograph is the typical production company/distribution company logos, alongside the movie credits (in steeltongs). As well as this, I have included my movie's film certificate rating (12A), and the film release date.

Research & Planning: Actor 3 (Abigail Woodcock) Profile

Abigail Woodcock will be playing the role of the male protagonists' 'current girlfriend'. She will be seen mostly on screen arguing with the male protagonist, and will eventually break up with him. We get a negative feeling about this character from the outset, and the audience will approve of the break up as a way of the male protagonist and his high school sweetheart getting back together. The character will come across as quite 'fake', she will be very into her looks and finds it difficult to care for others. The audience will feel some sympathy for the character as she is 'replaced' by the male protagonists high school sweetheart; though ultimately the audience will prefer his ex to his current girlfriend.

Research & Planning: Actor 2 (Megan Ormiston) Profile

Megan Ormiston will play the role of the male protagonists 'high school sweetheart', or his 'ex'. The audience will immediately like this character as she is sweet, very natural and is incredibly caring, smart and funny. The male protagonist eventually falls back in love with this character, as does she with him. Although she is seen to 'replace' the male protagonists' current girlfriend, the audience agree with the male protagonists' reasoning for choosing her over his current girlfriend.

Research & Planning: Actor 1 (Chris Holtie) Profile

Chris Holtie will play the role of male protagonist. He thinks he is in love with his current girlfriend, until one day he is reunited with his high school sweetheart. His love for his current girlfriend declines rapidly as he falls for his ex. Although he may sound like a character with bad morals (because he breaks up with his current girlfriend), the audience will feel sorry for him and his feelings for his ex girlfriend (his high school sweetheart) will resonate with the audience, and they will ultimately support his decisions.

Research & Planning: Chosen Film Name, Production and Distribution Company Logos

After meeting with my partner, we have decided on the name of our film, the logo we will be using for our production company 'Picture House', and the logo we will be using for our distribution company 'Lights Out'.

Chosen film name:

"Double Ex"

We decided to name our film Double Ex as it gives our audience a clue as to the plot of the film. The film name also has a double meaning. On one hand it states that the film will have two characters which are 'ex's (as in past relationships), but it is also a play on the words 'Triple X', which may suggest mild sexual activity within the film. As well as this, our audience survey agreed with our decision as 57% of users chose the name 'Double Ex' over 'The Ex Ex'.

Chosen Production company logo:

As mention in our previous meeting post, we decided to name our production company 'Picture House'. I came up with the name as I believe it to be quite a fitting name for a studio that produces rom-com films. The name is not genre-specific, so it would allow for production of films with other genres. Myself and my partner agreed to use this logo design (one I created) as it incorporated the symbolism of the 'House', but did so in quite a subtle way. We agreed mixture of serif and sans-serif fonts worked very nicely.

Chosen Distribution company logo:

Again, as mentioned in a previous meeting post, myself and my partner decided to name our distribution company 'Lights Out'. We agreed that we wanted a name that was quite abstract, though not too abstract that it would be difficult to remember. I came up with the idea of naming the company 'Lights Out', as it relates to the screening element of distribution. The phrase 'lights out' can also be connected with the process of the dimming of lights when in a cinema screening. The logo itself was designed by my partner. I created a similar design, but we agreed it wasn't legible when viewed from far away.

Research & Planning: Friends With Benefits Movie Magazine Analysis

Genre

It is abundantly clear from the pose of the two characters on the cover of this magazine that the film in question, Friends With Benefits, is a romance. Although we known Friends With Benefits to be a romantic-comedy, the comedy aspect isn't too clear on this cover. The only glimpse at humour is the slightly mischievous smirk on Mila Kunis' face as she grasps Justin Timberlake's tie. Both the lighting and colours of the cover photo are very nature-inspired, which symbolises a natural love story. The other colours on the page include pink and white, which are perceived to be quite feminine colours; again stereotypically insinuating that the movie is a romance, perhaps from a females point of view.

Representation

There is clear representation of stereotyped gender roles in this magazine cover. The male protagonist is seen to be grasping the main female character, whilst she is cosying up to him in a stereotypically sensitive feminine manner. There is a slight break from the stereotyped gendered roles as we see that the female character could be said to have the power as she is grasping the male protagonists tie, and he seems to be fine letting her do so. The look on the female characters face leads us to believe that she is in the driving seat of the relationship, which undoubtedly will be the main focus of the films storyline. The male character in this photograph is dressed very smartly, which perhaps goes against the stereotype that men dress badly and look generally quite scruffy. In contrast, the slender female character is dressed in a very stereotypical glamorous black dress.

Narrative

From the picture on the magazine, I would assume that the storyline goes along the lines of: two strangers are somehow introduced into each others lives, perhaps through work (purely based on what they are wearing, very formal clothing), and then the male protagonist (I have come to this conclusion based on his stature in the photograph) falls madly in love with the female character; who plays hard to get (based on her grasping of the male characters' tie, in a mischievous yet sexy way), but she eventually succombs to the male protagonists' charm and they live happily ever after. Or something to that extent. The cover line 'Secrets of sexual attraction' indicates that there may be a focus on sexuality in the film, perhaps through either sexual tension or perhaps sex scenes.

Audience

Based on the narrative of the movie (which I have concluded from the photograph on the cover of the magazine), I would say that the target audience of this film is females aged between 16 and 24. I think the sexual aspect of the story line may put off older audiences, and it may not be understood fully by viewers under the age of 16. I think females will be mostly interested in watching this film as the magazine itself 'Elle' is aimed towards females, after all it is a female lifestyle magazine. There is also the inclusion of an attractive male on the cover which will undoubtedly attract a large amount of viewers from Justin Timberlake's fan base. I do believe there will be a lot of men/boys watching this film also, perhaps aged between 15 and 21; as they may be fans of Justin Timberlake, or the idea of sexual activity including Mila Kunis might attract them.

Media Language

The masthead of this magazine is very prominent on the page, it takes up over a quarter of the real estate of the page. Contrary to this, the masthead resides in the background of the two characters in the cover photo. Unlike a traditional magazine where the date and issue number are positioned at the top of the page, they are both found next to the barcode in the bottom right of the page; which works better as it does not draw any attention away from the main feature. The cover lines appear to scale in a hierarchy, with the most important cover lines being in bigger, bolder text; and the less important ones being in thinner fonts and at smaller font sizes. For example, the main feature 'Mila + Justin' is written in a slab font, and is coloured a very vibrant pink-red. In contrast, the less important coverline 'How To Stop Being Angry' is written in a smaller font size and is coloured black - it might not immediately attract the readers' attention.

Research & Planning: Anchorman 2 Movie Magazine Analysis

Genre

It is pretty clear from the costumes of the characters that the film is a comedy. This is because the actors playing these roles are generally well known, so the addition of a quirky moustache and humourous clothing indicates that the film is not one to be taken seriously. The mixture of serious, smirking and outright strange facial expressions also hints that this is a comedy. The seriousness of the center male indicates that he is the main protagonist, as does his extravagant clothing. The actors themselves, Paul Rudd and Will Ferrel, are known for playing comedic roles; so this is yet another clue as to the genre of the film. The fact that the cover is of four males gives away that the film is not a romance, nor does the inclusion of out-dated clothing suggest that it is an action movie. These features, along with the line tag line 'Staying classy...' ultimately tells the audience that it is a comedy film.

Representation

The fact that there are only photographs of men on the cover of this Film magazine suggests the gendered attitude of the film. We can assume that the protagonist of the film is a man, and we also assume it is the man in the center of the cover photo. These four men appear to be a stereotypical group of boys. There seem to be four very unique personalities represented in the cover photo, with the male character on the left looking seemingly 'bookish', and the fellow slightly to the right of him looking quite traditional and outspoken. The protagonist in the center comes of as very extravagant, the audience may assume his character to be quite pompous and arrogant. The male character on the far right appears to be inappropriate and rude. The staggered layering of the characters may also indicate each of their roles in the film. For example, the character behind the rest of the characters may be secondary and less important, whilst the protagonist at the front of the other characters is the most important.

Narrative

The film title 'Anchorman' is typeset in a bold sans-serif font, which is overlayed on top of the cover photo. The title gives a clue as to the theme of the movie, which we presume to be related to a news room or the job as a news anchorman. The inclusion of four male characters suggests that they are a friendship group, perhaps work colleagues. The characters' attire and over grown facial hair suggests the film is set in the 70's/early 80's, though this is just speculation. Like I mentioned earlier, the choice of clothing for each of the character's gives an insight into their personalities. The tag line 'Staying Classy...' suggests some sort of irony, which may suggest that the characters in the film aren't actually very classy at all - though the protagonist does look to be very well dressed (in a suit) and well groomed (you might say).

Audience

Because the cover photo is of classic and very well known A-list Hollywood actors, I would presume the target audience of this film is quite broad, possibly between 18 and 34 year olds. The reason I believe there to be quite a large audience is because the film is part of a franchise, with this being a second installment. The first movie was originally released in 2004. I believe the audience will be primarily males, possibly due to the fact that one of the main attractions of the film is the actors themselves - comedic actors such as Steve Carell carry a large male fan base. The cover is trying to resonate with viewers of the first Anchorman film. I think this as they have used the same styling of costume/hair/make-up as was seen in the first movie; which will be quite nostalgic for some audience members.

Media Language

The busy layout of the page indicates that this magazine is one which includes a lot of content. This is further realised as the feature 'Anchorman 2' is actually listed as part of a series entitled 'Our Ultimate Guide to Small and Big Screen'. The magazine's masthead is oversized and self-explanatory (the magazine is called 'Total Film', and it is a film magazine). The magazine features a total of 13 cover lines, with the feature 'Anchorman 2' taking most of the attention. Above the masthead there are several photographs which act as teasers for a feature within the magazine 'Ultimate TV & Movie Winter Preview'. Written quite small within the masthead area is the date and issue number, along with a link to their online website. We can see from the cover that the 3 colour rule has been generally stuck to, with is being yellow, black and red in this instance but with a small inclusion of blue.

Research & Planning: 'Good Bear Gone Bad'

'Good Bear Gone Bad' is a short video I produced for my employer, Dixons Travel for presentation at their annual managers' conference. The aim of the video was to highlight our Manchester Terminal 1 store 's customer plan.

I really enjoyed the process of coming up with ideas for the video, as my manager gave me creative freedom. I was even able to convince the actual Airport police to get involved; as you can see when Pudsey bear gets arrested, he is read his legal rights.

This project was a great opportunity for me to practice my production and editing skills. I was the 'producer' of the video, so I chose every element from the colleagues that would be involved, to the location and shooting schedule. I even got to order an (alleged) Pudsey bear costume. The shoot itself was very fun, as I was able to get a lot of my colleagues involved. We shot the footage using a Canon 6D SLR, and I edited it all together using Final Cut Pro X on an Apple Retina Macbook Pro.

Before I embarked upon this project, I had only scarcely used Final Cut Pro X, so I have managed to learn a lot whilst I was editing this video. I learnt to use different transitions, play with audio (such as remove background noise and make dialogue more prominent) and use different titles and video effects (such as the high contrast filter on the Pudsey bear sequence).

Overall I really enjoyed being part of this project and the skills I have taken away from it will help me detrimentally when producing and editing my own movie trailer.

With thanks to the Dixons Travel terminal 1 team and the Manchester Airport Police.

Research & Planning: Social Networking Feedback

I asked my twitter followers to tell me which film name idea they preferred; 'Double Ex' or 'The Ex'. I have embedded the replies I received below.

Research & Planning: Distribution Company Logos

Once I came up with the name 'LightsOut' for our distribution company, I decided to produce four possible logos for the company. Each logo embeds some sort of symbolism to the name in some sort. The first logo is negative on the word 'out' which symbolises the lights being turned off. The second one is very similar to the first, except that I have added two opposing shadows to the words 'Lights' and 'Out'. In the third logo, I have filled the white where the centre of the 'O' usually is; again representing the dark. For the last logo (and my personal favourite), I have created a lamp within the centre of the 'O' in 'Out'.

My personal favourite

Research & Planning: Prop List

Suitcases (for scenes 1, 7 and 8)

Piles of clothes (for scenes 1, 7 and 11)

Car (for scenes 2 and 8)

Pans (for scene 4)

Plates & Cutlery (for scenes 5 and 14)

Food (for scenes 4, 5 and 14)

Bottles of alcohol (full and empty) (for scenes 9 and 10)

Research & Planning: Costumes List

Male character (protagonist)

He will dress quite trendy, but understated. Smart/casual. This could be simply some nice jeans, a graphic t-shirt and lace-up boots.

Current girlfriend

She will be dressed in designer clothes, with quite a loud image. Very fashion conscious. Perhaps a leather skirt with a graphic blouse and heels.

Ex girlfriend

She will wear quite understated clothes, will look good without trying too hard. More natural colours; tries not to stand out too much. Dark jeans and a nice patterned top with flats.

Dad

Very basic clothing. Not much thought into what he wears. Jeans and a plain top.

Mum

Quite stylish but again, very understated. Possibly some knitwear, mum jeans and walking boots.
